The pervert's guide to ideology Partie Cinq/The Rolling Stones Dartford Tour of Becky

"It was already Marx who, long ago, emphasised that a commodity is never just a simple object that we buy and consume. A commodity is an object full of theological, even metaphysical niceties. Its presence always reflects an invisible transcendence, and the classical publicity for Coke quite openly refers to this absent, invisible quality: "Coke is the real thing" or "Coke, that's it". What is that "it", "the real thing"? It's not just another positive property of Coke, something that can be described or pinpointed through chemical analysis; it's that mysterious "something more", the indescribable excess which is the object cause of my desire.

In our postmodern, whatever we call them, societies we are obliged to enjoy. Enjoyment becomes a kind of weird perverted duty.

The paradox of Coke is that you are thirsty, you drink it but, as everyone knows, the more you drink it, the more thirsty you get.

A desire is never simply the desire for a certain thing. It's always also a desire for desire itself. A desire to continue to desire. Perhaps the ultimate horror of a desire is to be fully filled in, met, so that I desire no longer. The ultimate melancholic experience is the experience of a loss of desire itself.

It's not that in some return to a previous era of natural consumation, where we got rid off this excess and we're only consuming for actual needs, like you were thirsty, you drank water and so on... We cannot return to that: the excess is with us forever. So let's have a drink of Coke. It's getting warm, it's no longer the real Coke, and that's the problem: this passage from sublime to excremental dimension. When it's cold, properly served, it gets a certain attraction. All of a sudden, this can change into shit. It's the elementary dialectics of commodities.

We are not talking about objective, factual properties of a commodity, we are talking only here about that elusive surplus.

Kinder Surprise egg. A quite astonishing commodity. The surprise of the Kinder Surprise Egg is that this excessive object, the cause of your desire, is here materialized in the guise of an object, a plastic toy which fills in the inner void of the chocolate egg. The whole delicate balance is between these two dimensions: what you bought (the chocolate egg) and the surplus, probably made is some Chinese gulag or whatever, the surplus that you get for free.

I don't think that the chocolate frame is here just to send you on a deeper void towards the inner treasure, what Plato calls the "agalma", which makes you a worthy person, which makes a commodity a desirable commodity, I think it's the other way around; we should aim at the higher goal, the goal in the middle of the object precisely in order to be able to enjoy the surface. This is what it is the antimetaphysical lesson which is difficult to accept.

All pictures taken on 14th January 2017 in Dartford, Kent, England, United Kingdom. Special thanks to Finn and extra special thanks to Becky for making my childhood and teenage dream come true because Dartford is the future capital of the world and I'll fight anybody who tries to convince me otherwise and there's the sun, there's the moon, there's the air to breath and there's the Rolling Stones.

"My psychoanalytic friends are telling me that typically today patients who come to the analysts to resolve their problems feel guilty not because of excessive pleasures, not because they indulge in pleasures which go against their sense of duty or morality or whatsoever, on the contrary; they feel guilty for not enjoying enough, for not being able to enjoy."

3 minutes/Víctor knows it all/Ode to Sam Pt. 3

I'll always remember the day I met Sam. It was actually by night in Beijing, but probably noon on our side of the world. I didn't take pictures of her when it happened, which I regret; if there's one moment in my recent past that I would have liked to keep captured, that's the first few words I exchanged with Sam.

I invited her to come and stay with me in Barcelona 3 minutes into our introductory conversation, if my memory serves me right. When you feel it, you feel it, they say. Intuition would beat science any day, and Sam would beat you all any day, as well.

All pictures taken between 4th and 5th September 2016 around downtown Barcelona, Spain. Special thanks to Víctor, and extra special thanks to Sam Jam because she's still the most amazing human being on the Milky Way although she doesn't know yet, and we'll be friends minimum until our 80s and we have telepathy.

Sam Nike/Ode to Sam Pt. 1

"Life is a matter of a miracle that is collected over time by moments, flabbergasted to be in each other's presence. The world is an exam to see if we can rise into direct experience. Our eyesight is here as a test to see if we can see beyond it. Matter is here as a test for our curiosity. Doubt is here as an exam for our vitality. Thomas Mann wrote that he would rather participate in life than write 100 stories. Giacometti was once run down by a car, and he recalled falling into a lucid faint, a sudden exhilaration, as he realized that at last something was happening to him. An assumption develops that you cannot understand life and live life simultaneously. I do not agree entirely. Which is to say I do not exactly disagree. I would say that life understood is life lived. But the paradoxes bug me, and I can learn to love and make love to the paradoxes that bug me. And on really romantic evenings of self, I go salsa dancing with my confusion. Before you drift off, don't forget. Which is to say, remember. Because remembering is so much more a psychotic activity than forgetting. Lorca said that the iguana will bite those who do not dream. And as one realizes that one is a dream figure in another person's dream, that is self awareness."

Timothy Levitch on Waking Life (2001), as recommended by Sam Jam and because nobody in the entire universe dignifies a gigantic paper Nike shoe like she does.

All pictures taken on 3rd September 2016 in Sant Andreu de la Barca, Barcelona, Spain. Special thanks to Sam for being the most amazing human being in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as for her unrelenting refusal of such fact.
